The Deep Listening Band- Then & Now Now & Then (Taiga, 2008)

Deep Listening- "First it was the name of an album that came out about 20 years ago and made new music history...Then it became the name of the band that recorded that album. Then it became the name of a practice, an approach to art, improvisation, exploration and, well, living, that drove that band, a band of crazies led by Pauline Oliveros, to lower themselves into a huge underground concrete cistern in the state of Washington”.

Here, 20 years later, Oliveros, Stuart Dempster and David Gamper celebrate an anniversary of improvisation, innovation and commitment with their first ever vinyl release. This vinyl-only document contains four sidelong tracks, one reissued and three previously unreleased. “Cannery Row” was originally available on the Troglodyte’s Delight album and captures the band in Tarpaper Cave, which Dempster recalls as “an old limestone quarry near Rosendale, New York that had lovely dripping water sounds and Valhalla-like mists.”

The previously unreleased tracks were gathered from three separate live performances at the Sounds Like Now Festival, Sound Exchange American Composers Forum, and Engine27, a 16-channel installation of special speakers. The audio was mastered for vinyl by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200g-virgin-vinyl in a limited edition of 500." (source)

*Not a composition from this collection, but...here's The Deep Listening Band performing with Ellen Fullman & her Long String Instrument.

Wire- 1976 Demo

Who knew that Wire was once such a full-throttle punk band? Here, they're taking cues from Johnny Thunders, The Stooges and Sabbath, but upping the pace as that first wave of speed-fueled British Punk was wont to do. These guys sound like snot-nosed, shouting bastards, their vocals more akin to Dischord punk acts like Minor Threat or Government Issue than any other band I can think of from '76. Dudes are pissed. 12FU.

The Pyramids- Lalibela (1973)

The Pyramid's First Album. "Lalibela" is an extended polyrhythmic spiritual-jazz jam, heavily steeped in righteous mid-70s Afrocentrism and ensemble collaboration. A 28 minute experimental acoustic dynamo that builds on a driving organic groove for a good 16 minutes before engaging into freakout mode- a burst of ecstatic "freeness" that never fails (nor is failed by) the groups' apparent devotion to tempo. Great stuff. Never too skronky. Led by saxophonist/composer Idris Ackamoor. More Roland Kirk + Moondog than Anthony Braxton, et al.

The Monochrome Set- Early Recordings: 1975-1977 "White Noise" (Capitured Tracks 73)

"THE MONOCHROME SET have a huge legacy in post-punk and indie rock history. White Noise represents the period before their first LP or 7-inch, before punk really took hold in the UK, in fact. These seven songs from '75-'77 have never appeared on vinyl before this release, and we're thrilled to get it out there. Monochrome Set have recently reformed for a European tour." (Midhaven)

Sardonic, low-key rock with a crystal clear Velvets influence. Hints of Devo-esque New Wave in tracks like "We Are Zarbie" & "Flesh.Trash.Heat". A tasty serving of '70s pre-punk from this largely underrated group. 320 Vinyl Rip by yours truly.

The Magick Heads- Before We Go Under (Flying Nun, 1995)

In celebration of their imminent Portland tour-date (@ Holocene, 10/5), here's another side-project from some founding member(s) of The Clean- This time, its Robert Scott. The Magick Heads sound like folk-rock out of the Paisley Underground, with female-led vox from Jane Sinnott. The title track was apparently written and released in 1993 as an indie pop single on Teenbeat for Barbara Manning. Must admit, I'm a bit fonder of the MH vibe than that of the actual songs. (Perhaps unrelated, but I feel the same way about L.A.'s Rain Parade. )*Anyhow, I'm fairly sure this rip has a higher bit-rate than the one previously available at Kiwi Tapes.

"Dunedin, New Zealand folk-pop group the Magick Heads was led by singer Jane Sinnott and guitarist Robert Scott, the latter the onetime bassist for the seminal Clean as well as the frontman for his own longstanding unit the Bats. 3D's guitarist David Mitchell played drums in the original Magick Heads lineup, which formed in 1991; other players floated in and out of the group's ranks, with Sinnott and Scott joined by drummer Jim Strang for their 1994 Flying Nun debut Before We Go Under." The Great Unwashed- Collection (Flying Nun)

In the wake of the 1982 breakup of the legendary Clean, brothers David and Hamish Kilgour continued writing songs together; adopting the tongue-in-cheek name Great Unwashed, they released the 1983 LP Clean Out of Our Minds, a collection of primitive home recordings with a slightly experimental bent. The record was well received by steadfast Clean fans, and with bassist Peter Gutteridge in tow, the Kilgour brothers played a handful of live dates. A five-track double single subsequently appeared, and in mid-1984 the Great Unwashed swelled to a quartet with the addition of Ross Humphries; however, by the end of the year, the group disbanded. (Last.fm)

So, I'd posted Clean Out Of Their Minds a few months back, but this one has it all. A newly aquired 250-ish VBR rip. Can't wait to see The Clean next week at Holocene, on their very short US tour. Already bought the ticket. You can prolly expect at least one other Flying Nun record to go up here in the next week, 'cause somebody's excited!

The Beena Sangeet Orchestra- Gems of Yankarran (Trinidad, 1970?)

"DEDICATED IN MEMORY OF THE LATE ISAAC YANKARRAN

This album features selections by an outstanding Trinidad and Tobago artist HARM YANKARRAN. It is in fact a tribute to a late Father whose premature demise on 13th Feb 1969 shocked the cultural world. For indeed, the late ISAAC YANKARRAN was the unparalled melody genius of Indian Classical singing in these parts. His styling was distinct and unique, earning hm an infectious popularity.

ISAAC YANKARRAN is no more but he has left behind a progeny whose similarity in physique, voice and styling confuse even the closest friends and admirers. SHARM, who was born on March 4th 1951 at Brikfield Road, Carapichaima, Trinidad was inspired by his great father at a very tender age. And it is clear that the late ISAAC saw in his young son the sort of basic talent that could be moulded into greatness. At the age of 10, SHARM was already a member of his father's orchestra, singing, playing the mandolin, harmonium and accordian under the watchful eye and guidance of his father...

...Formed ten years ago ath Rickson Street, El Dorado Village, Tunapuna Trinidad W.I., by the Soogrim Brothers, Motilal and Suresh, THE BEENA SANGEET ORCHSTRA is now one of the top orchestras in the country. Notwithstanding many difficulties, the orchestra kept together as a group and has contributed significantly to the development of Indian Culture in Trinidad and Tobago." (from the back cover)

Sweet Afrobeat!

A brief digest of GC's recent favorite Afrobeat finds on the internets. William Onyeabor, Disco Blaze & ‘Les Meilleurs Souvenirs de la 1ére Biennale Artistique et Culturelle de la Jeunesse‘ vols 1-5.

William Onyeabor- Crashes in Love (1977), Atomic Bomb (1978) & Tomorrow (1979) (@ No Not Nyet) I'm a major fan of this man's funky Afro-Synths. Also, his cowboy hat. "Fantastic Man" is my jam, for real! (*I'm still looking-out for prime rips of Good Name, Anything You Sow, and Body & Soul)

Disco Blaze- Jump Back (@ Holy Warbles)
Righteous, bumping left-field 70s disco craziness, right here. Boom!

‘Les Meilleurs Souvenirs de la 1ére Biennale Artistique et Culturelle de la Jeunesse‘, Rootblog via Global Groove.) An amazing 5-LP 1970 series of Malian large-ensemble grooves, including Orchestre Régional de Sikasso, Orchestre Régional de Mopti, Orchestre Régional de Kayes, Orchestre Régional de Ségou and L’Orchestre National ‘A’ de la République du Mali (All of these either have-been or will be reissued on LP by Mississippi Records. The latest reissue in this series is L’Orchestre National ‘A’- out in Portland now and elsewhere very very soon.)

*Minor caveat, my rip of the Orchestre Regional de Mopti record is the best on the web. I'd recommend you grab that one from me, and the rest of these albums from Rootblog. Two-stop shopping.

Andres Landero- 16 Canciones (@ Purayaca)

If you've been digging on some classic cumbia lately, it'd be wise to get started with legendary Colombian accordionist Andres Landero, aka "King of the Cumbia". There's surprisingly little Landero bio material on the www, especially not en Ingles, but there is a fairly interesting thesis on him by Bardo Martinez, called Andres Landero and Resistance to the Commercializaton of Colombian Music posted at Listen Recovery*. For my money, I'd wager that Manu Chao has spent his solo career taking vocal cues directly from this guy.

*Also lifted that image above from Listen Recovery. Figured it'd make better artwork than what comes with the original cd.

(V/A)- The Hundred Thousand Fools of God: Musical Travels in Central Asia (And Queens, New York)

Here's the CD included with this book by Theodore Levin. All tracks except 1 & 2 recorded by him. 320kbps.

"The Hundred Thousand Fools of God: Musical Travels in Central Asia (and Queens, New York) was written by someone with a lot of knowledge about traditional music of Central Asia--or, more specifically, the music of Transoxania, the region "beyond the Oxus River" that includes parts of Turkmenistan and Tajikistan and most of Uzbekistan.

Levin spent time in Tashkent as a graduate student in the 1970s, and he has returned to this region on several occasions, both during the Soviet era and after. This book is, in part, a summary of his experiences and thoughts concerning this region of the world, the people who inhabit it, and the musicians who seek to maintain their culture's music in spite of fierce opposition (first from communism, where Moslems were forced underground and music was "Europeanized," and now from capitalism, for although religion is relatively tolerated, Western culture's influence on music and life has begun to eclipse the traditional cultures of Central Asia).

...A "fool of god," he notes, is a Sufi term identifying "one who has given himself to the life of the spirit and is under the special protection of God, but also a dervish or an ascetic--a person not entirely 'of this world.'" As Levin notes, he and his Uzbek companion, Otanazar Matyakubov (OM for short), began using this phrase "fool of god" to "describe a particular musician who, in both his musical activities and his personal life, seemed to embody the high ethical standards, humility, and altruistic spirit that characterized the figure of the...fool of God." Levin goes on to say, "We knew at best several dozen [fools of God] in Transoxania whose life spans overlapped, or had overlapped, with ours. But there might have been a hundred, a thousand, or even a hundred thousand who had come before. Others would surely follow" (37-38).

Levin's book, then, chronicles his journeys throughout this region, as he and OM search out these "fools of God," traditional musicians who have managed to preserve and sustain their culture's beliefs and music despite the intense pressures of the modern world. Some of these people are professional musicians, such as Turgun Alimatov and Munajat Yulchieva. Levin's encounters with these professionals suggest that these artists struggle to make ends meet, largely because the music they play is typically classical maquam, or Islamic court music, and there haven't been emirs in Samarkand since the 1920s. These artists survive playing at state-sponsored concerts or at weddings and other festivals (called toys)--though, thanks to Levin and others (like Yo-Yo Ma), they are starting to gain a wider Western audience." Suni McGrath- Childgrove (Adelphi, 1972)

The 3rd LP from American 12-string guitarist, Suni McGrath. A recent and highly appreciated gift from our friend Owl. Right-off, I've been taken-in by McGrath's stellar rendition of "The Star of the County Down". His picking resonates with a sort of heart-sick, contemplative elegance that I'm just a sucker for. Its been on constant CONSTANT repeat. And though I've barely gotten past that first track, its already plain to see that this one'll be a gift that keeps on giving. Highly recommended.

Ranil y Su Conjunto- Ranil's Jungle Party (MassTropicas, 2010)

"Deeply funky psychedelic-surf guitar jams from Ranil y Su Conjunto Tropical (Ranil and his Tropical Band). Ranil’s Jungle Party (re-released for the first time by folks at Masstropicas and limited to 1,000 copies) brings back from the past the much loved popular music of Peruvian cumbia.

For the uninitiated, Peruvian (or Amazonian) cumbia was to Peru as Tropicália was to Brazil—a 1960s – 1970s popular music style that mixed (often irreverently) traditional music with those of African and the West. Hailing from the Belen district of Iquitos, nestled within the heart of the Amazonian rainforest, Ranil and Co. were definitely digging on some Western Surf music while keeping alive the traditional highland “huayño” dance music.

On Ranil’s Jungle Party, Ranil and his Tropical Band keep things in a mellow, funky mood with some heavy psych-surf guitar workouts. The result is a style mash-up not unlike that of African “Juju” or “High-Life” music, popularized by the incendiary Stratocaster guitar playing of King Sunny Adé. In fact, think of Ranil’s Jungle Party as King Sunny Adé jamming with some Andes dudes while on vacation in Peru. Dig?" (Light in the Attic)

Lucho Bermúdez- Colombia Tierra Querida

Cumbias, Porros, Gaitas, Boleros! Lucho Bermúdez was a heavyweight Colombian clarinetist and bandleader. His legendary Orquesta worked in hotels, clubs, festivals, radio- basically everywhere- playing nearly any folk or popular dance style one might've found in mid-20th century Colombia.

Guest post courtesy of my pal, Emma C:

"If you ever jammed out hard to Cumbia en Do Menor, you'll probably dig this stuff too. There's some quality ululation and wailing clarinet. This came from a friend of mine from the Colombian Chocó and I'll likely be asking him for some pacific marimba stuff soon."

Suni McGrath- Cornflower Suite (1969)

A new discovery for me. Suni McGrath's mystically-influenced folk guitar rates up there with Fahey, Basho, Sandy Bull & the like...Big thanks to Aidan for the tip on this.

"Blue Isfahan" stands alone on the album, as its the only track using an electric guitar or tabla accompaniment. Its eastern modes will likely appeal to all those newfound Omar Khorshid fans.

From the Liner Notes:

"The music on this record is my attempt to explore and further the american acoustic guitar. I have four sources for the musics here presented: Bulgarian music for rhythmic modes and ideas, also modulation of melodic modes and harmonies; Hindustani for subtle melodic graces and ideas of variation; Fahey for the conception of the art; Bartok for modal harmonies analogous to conventional western harmony, and treatment of themes.

Cornflower Suite is a set of variations on a theme never completely stated. It is named for that most wondrous weed, the blue cornflower that blooms like little bits of mirror reflecting a perfect summer sky. It includes an earlier piece known to some as sassafras tea..."

Mirrors- Something that Would Never Do (1974-75 *Violet Times LP)

"MIRRORS USES BIG MUFF FUZZ TONES"

"Finally! The classic Cleveland, OH sounds from the 70's all on one handy full length- 15 trax, including both sides of the Hearthan 7" single, all but one of the "Those Were Different Times" Scat 10" cuts, and others from "Hands In My Pockets" cd on Overground. It's solid, some might say a "best of" even. All trax recorded '74 and '75. Officially licensed from the band and remastered for the ear by John Golden, includes those cool old school, tip-on jacket covers that most of the record nerds i know love, but don't seem to know what they are. 800 copies, worldwide."

You can still purchase one of the last remaining LPs straight from Violet Times.

Ishman Bracey- Suitcase Full of Blues (Monk, 2010)

"One of the best, if lesser-known Delta bluesmen of the 1920s, singer and guitarist Ishman Bracey (1901-1970), along with his good friend Tommy Johnson, began playing juke joints first in Jackson, and then all over Mississippi around 1917, but did not make his first recordings until 1928. He recorded his first sessions for the Victor label with Charlie McCoy on second guitar, but by 1930 his recording career was over -- likely due to the onset of the Great Depression which made the recording industry dry up for the next decade. Bracey eventually left the blues scene for the church, and his blues output is therefore rather slim. He recorded a total of just 16 tracks in all and original 78s fetch high sums."

Allyson Mellberg-Taylor: An Unearthly Child

These are the work of my friend Allyson Mellberg-Taylor, who's gracefully unsettling paintings will be on display next week at the Cinders Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. An Unearthly Child opens Friday, Sept 10 and runs until Oct 10. Allyson was just interviewed in The Sept 2010 issue of Juztapoz (*Link is to an older feature-"Process-Inspiration"). She and her husband Jeremy Seth Taylor make their own paints from egg tempura, walnuts and various dye plants harvested from their home garden. They live in Charlottesville, VA with their sweet cat, Fricktoria. NYC- Go see this show!

*This list excludes Congos- Heart of the Congos, which is truly the jam. Seems like its still being actively sniped at by DMCA types. Everybody's fileshare link appears to have vanished for that one. If you've clicked through this entire entry, though, chances are you probably need it. FYI, there's plenty more good records's from Blood & Fire, but any more and this starts becoming a discography, instead of a primer.

V/A- Angola 60's: 1956-1970

"Buda Musique's [Angola] series...captures the sounds of different ethnic regions within Angola, their effects on each other, and the way that the Portuguese and Cuban influences were absorbed into urban Angolan culture. Some songs focus on close polyphonic harmonies, tapping rhythms and ringy, simple guitar melodies; others have cascades of creaky percussion and huge choruses; still others anchor on the accordion. It starts to get really interesting around track nine, when the frenzy slows, turning to fabulous intimate, small-scale recordings that you can't tell if are Latin or African in origin. By the end of the disk, they've brought in the electric guitars, jumping up, incorporating more Western chord progressions and swinging funk rock, especially on the classic, screaming 'Muzangola' by Vum Vum. Can't wait for the rest!" (Other Music)

Good stuff. 320kbps. If anyone's got a line on a better scan, hit me up!
